Still Life: A Mess of a Desk

I tend to be a little anal about the way I like things organized. This absolutely applies to my workspace–a messy desk is the result of a messy mind (How do I sound like a 50-something teacher from a Beverly Cleary book?) However, my job is such a weird combination of running around and desk work that I’m finding it difficult to keep things as neat and tidy as I’d like. There’s usually a stack of magazines, receipts, style sheets, business cards, and merchandise loan forms all trying to take up residence in the same space next to my keyboard. Here’s what I’m usually working with:

Desk of a Fashion stylist

1.// Inspiration from magazine layouts

2.// The NY Times style section

3.// The current issue of Cincinnati Magazine and folders with info organized by issue and shoot

4.// My iPad, the better to review the hundreds of scouting shots from my phone

5.// A receipt from Nordstrom aka my second home

6.// A notebook for jotting down ideas old-school style

I gotta do better. Any suggestions?

Yessss! Beverly Cleary books were the bomb I was all about them in elementary school 🙂 the way I see it though, messy desks are kind of inevitable for me at least so I just accept it and try to limit the chaos if I can 🙂

My desk mess isn’t as purposeful more a collection of things that need to be put in their proper place.

I am of the opinion that some things NEED to be on the desk so you can see what needs to be done. It’s really just another method of organization if you think about it!

I used to be the most disorganized gal out there, but I felt thatpeople were looking at me differently for that–almost as if equating my desk’s appearance to my competence. The neater I myself look, and the neater my workspace looks, the more put together and “with it” I feel. Just keeping that in mind helped me organize my desk. Try colorful folders: they brighten the room up and add a pop of fun to a typical work day.

I do like the idea of colorful folders. And I’m thinking Lisa Frank makes just what I need!
