Mini Mendhi

2 Comments 18 August 2011

So on Monday evenings, the CAC hosts an adult craft night called, appropriately, “One Night, One Craft.” Anything that encourages grownups to act like kiddos is something I can get behind.

The most recent night was dedicated to do-it-yourself mendhi, and I thought “Why not?” It’s sort of like drawing on yourself, and much like Simon, I like to do draw-rings.

The instructor showed us how to mix the henna and coffee into a paste, then create a cone (I swear cone-making was the hardest part) and fill it with the mixture. I sketched out a basic idea – a stylized ‘T’ – and went to town on my arm, trying not to be jealous of my neighbor’s intricate design. Clearly, SHE had the cone thing down pat.

After a messy evening spent with my arm coated in sugar and lemon juice and wrapped in plastic, this was the result!

Now I kind of understand why people get full sleeve tattoos: it makes you feel like a badass.

Crazy or lazy

5 Comments 13 June 2011

Spent the weekend alternately lying around in complete slacker mode or running around like a chicken with my head cut off–no in-between. Crazy or lazy, I always say.

Thrifted shorts, belt & top; no-name bag; Naughty Monkey sandals; Stetson hat

On Saturday, the most strenuous thing I did was eat. To be fair, I actually LEFT THE HOUSE to do so. TWICE. That has to count for something.

SSOM

On Sunday, I headed over to Main Street to volunteer at Second Sundays on Main‘s kick-off event! It was a gorgeous day, and I took plenty of photos while still managing to do a little shopping and a LOT of eating. You know how I do.

I bought a tomato plant that I hope to Not Kill (that’s my not-dead basil, cilantro, and lettuce in the pot in the background) , a fun ring from Black Diamond Designs, cute button earrings from YayToonDay, and peppermint soap (SO refreshing in a post-workout shower) from Pine Lane Soaps.

After stopping by 4U Urban Boutique‘s one-year anniversary party (congrats, guys!) and a last-minute trip to Kings Island, I was thoroughly exhausted. How was your weekend?

Do-It-Yourself Fashion

5 Comments 29 June 2009

While I’m much too busy lazy to actually do anything about it, I’ve always loved the idea of do-it-yourself fashion. Unfortunately–or maybe fortunately–the height of my forays into hand-crafted apparel and accessories peaked right around the time of neon puffy paints and Jams shorts.

However, my generosity compels me to share some of the best DIY tutorials from talented bloggers across the web. From bib necklaces to Miu Miu-inspired minis, here are some great ways to further personalize your look, glitter not included:

From “The Miu Miu inspired skirt tutorial”, Kingdom of Style

From “DIY: Studded jeans and more”, Miss at la Playa

From “How to: Scissor a baggy shirt into a bitchin’ top”, Cheap JAP

From “Glamourai DIY/Candied Crumbcatcher”, The Glamourai (cover girl for Style Sample Magazine issue 2!)

From “Welcome to my Bleach Party”, Femme Rationale (Style Sample Magazine issue 1 cover girl! Hmmm…is there a pattern here?)

Have you done any interesting DIY projects lately? Share so I can get all excited and then not do it!

Hangin' Out: OTR Gateway Celebration

2 Comments 22 June 2009

This past weekend, The Boy and I braved the heat and humidity and hung out at the Over-the-Rhine/Gateway Celebration.

We checked out some of the local vendors and marveled at the creative talent. You know I was all about the clothes and accessories!

I bought a pair of earrings from Amy at Ovenfried Beads. Can’t you see recreating a funkier version of the star necklace from the YSL Spring 2008 show with these star-shaped pendants? I smell a DIY project…

We talked about the tees from Wire&Twine–the Cincinnati Subway Map (for optimists) was my favorite. I really wish we had better public transportation…y’all know I hate driving.

We stopped by Lavomatic for some wine and a bite to eat. We both wound up ordering the mushroom lasagna, which was amazing!  Because I couldn’t resist dessert (I can never resist, really), I had the delicious white chocolate raspberry tarte. Mmmhmm. I’m really going to have to hit the gym this week!

How was your weekend? Did you do anything exciting?
