Fashion Month Review

3 Comments 19 October 2009

Yet another fashion month has passed without any need for participation from yours truly. Don’t they know I’m supposed to be running thangs?

The Spring 2010 shows kicked off with New York Fashion Week back in September, and the fact that I wasn’t a part of Fashion’s Night Out and didn’t get to attend Alex Wang’s after party (We used to hang out in gas station parking lots back in my college party days–who knew we were starting a trend?) doesn’t bother me at all.

The fact that Matthew Williamson and Luella Bartley showed in London for the first time in years even though I wasn’t there is fine.

The fact that MiuMiu and Marni and Missoni (oh my!) went off without a hitch in Milan senza me is irrelevant.

The fact that Tommy Ton wasn’t snapping close-ups of my imaginary Chloe thigh high boots in Paris means nothing to me.

It’s fine. I’m fine. It all looked dreadfully boring anyway.

So.

Here are some of my favorites in random order with frivolous yet thought-provoking commentary, all arranged in a completely haphazard fashion:
Can’t you see Amber Rose breaking out of her Cirque du Soleil-worthy-catsuit rut with this Tim Hamilton dress?

Parade enough Dries in front of me, and I start thinking I can successfully mix multiple prints a la The Glamourai. Alas, I cannot.

Isabel Marant (and by association, Emmanuelle Alt) can do no wrong when it comes to Left Bank flea market chic.

This Mark Fast frock is begging for Posh to jump into it perfectly manicured feet first. Don’t worry, I’ll take care of David while she’s busy…

Lanvin brought tears to my eyes. Bravo, M. Elbaz! I shall wear a bowtie and grow a round tummy* in your honor.

Some people are against knock-offs. I am not one of them (unless obvious branding/logos are involved). In this case, I’m gonna need someone to knock off these Wang booties stat. I’m looking at you, Steve Madden

Inspiration: Vuitton Blushes in the Nude

2 Comments 31 July 2009

Though it’s almost the complete opposite of the fierce Xena Takes Manhattan looks we saw on the Fall runways, I was drawn to this softly feminine ensemble at Louis Vuitton. By using draping and ruching instead of ruffles and frills, toning down candy-sweet shades of pink with neutral beige, and adding glossy black accents via accessories, it’s a modern take on femme fatale that’s easy to duplicate:

1. Top, asos 2. Hareem trousers, Topshop 3. Hebano accessories belt, yoox 4. Sephora by OPI polish, Sephora 5. Acne heels, asos 6. Storee skirt, Anthropologie 7. Paola Frani blouse, yoox 8. Carvela heels, asos 9. Bodysuit, American Apparel

Style: Bold Shoulder

7 Comments 27 July 2009

Dynasty reruns notwithstanding, I think we can safely say 80’s fashion has been in full-on revival mode since the surprisingly persistent return of the legging. Though early 90’s-era grunge has been threatening to take over for the last few seasons, the multitude of shoulder pads on the Fall runways indicated that, at least ’til next February, the 80’s are still the retro decade of the moment.

Images, Style.com

To get in on the bold shoulder action, I of course turned to vintage. Why pay oodles of cash for new Armani when old JC Penney will do just fine?

While thrifting, I found this linen blazer as part of a two-piece set that included a dress I still haven’t had altered due to the fact that I keep convincing myself “I can take it in my darn self.”  Months later, this has proven to be extremely unlikely, so I figured I’d take the jacket for a spin on its own.  Already armed with puffed shoulders, a nipped waist, and an exaggerated peplum, I paired the jacket with simple pieces–skinny black pants, a simple gold camisole–and added a vintage belt and earrings and snakeskin Zanotti heels for interest.

I think the trick to making these jumpin’ jack flashback pieces work is to stick to one retro item and keep the rest as modern as possible.

What do you think? How do you mix your vintage pieces with the rest of your wardrobe?

Runway Fashion: Cruise Control

3 Comments 17 June 2009

The major designer’s 2010 Cruise Collections made their rounds last week. Cruise collections (also called resort) are pre-season lines designed for the time between January-March when well-heeled wealthy folks traditionally went on luxurious cruises to tropical locales–the better to avoid the bitter cold, my dear.

As I am obviously not one of those trust-funded types, my reason for following the cruise collections is a bit different and clearly self-serving: designers are showing clothes meant for warmer weather when the weather is actually warm!

This means I can take inspiration from the looks created and immediately apply them to my wardrobe, as opposed to having to watch Spring shows in February and wait for the weather to warm up. Which means I’m actually a season ahead! Ha! Take that, fashion industry!

Here are a few of my favorites:

You can integrate these key pieces into your wardrobe and have the look down pat in no time:

From left: Crispin & Basilio skirt, Revolve Clothing; skinny jeans, Forever21; Print dress, Kate Moss for Topshop; Cuffed shorts, Gap; Dramatic necklace, Forever21; Alexander Wang slouchy tee, LaGarconne; Bally strappy heels, Intermix; Boy by Band of Outsiders tailored blazer, Oak NYC.

Just because the only “cruise” I’ll be going on depends on traffic on I-75 doesn’t mean I can’t participate in the fashion fun!

Inspiration: Fall-ready?

No Comments 10 June 2009

The crazy schedule of the fashion industry (Spring shows in September, Fall shows in February) has thrown off my seasonal sensibilities for years. As a result, I usually start craving Fall items around the beginning of July or so. It’s kind of ridiculous–in the midst of watching fireworks on Sawyer Point in 90-degree weather wearing short-shorts and a tank top, I’m daydreaming about boots and sweaters!

This year, the craving has set in a bit early and it’s much more specific: I can’t stop thinking about thigh-high boots. If you recall, they were all over the Autumn/Winter runways:

fallready_runway0609Images, Style.com

I keep thinking about wearing them with a floaty romper, dangly earrings, and a brightly printed shawl, sort of like a cross between Talitha Getty and a YSL-clad Veruschka with a little Pretty Woman thrown in for good measure. Definitely a 70’s vibe.

fallready_collage0609

1. Diane Yang earrings, Max & Chloe 2. Warehouse playsuit, asos.com 3. Jamawar shawl, Shawls-scarf-stoles.com 4. Sunglasses, Forever21 5. Two Lips boots, Zappos

However…it is June after all, and thigh high boots aren’t necessarily warm-weather friendly.  Am I being ridiculous? How do you wear things that are technically out of season?

Work Style: Solid Gold

No Comments 18 May 2009

solidgoldtop0509

I remember buying this top on a thrifting adventure a few years ago, but I don’t remember why. Most likely, I figured I couldn’t pass up the opportunity to buy what was basically a tee shirt made out of gold sequins. Really, what self-respecting thrift-loving fashionista could?

Only, I haven’t really worn it. A crazy halloween costume doesn’t count (I was Rick James, bitch). Neither does dress up around the house, which happens just as often as it did when I was five. So, inspired by the 3.1 Philip Lim fall show, I tried to figure out a way to make it work.

solidgole0509

Shirt, blazer & belt, vintage; trousers, Luxe.

Have you ever figured out a way to wear the unworn items in the back of your closet? What did you do with them?

Wear It Now

No Comments 27 March 2009

wearitnowfall0309

The whole “Upper East Side housewife in the Hamptons” look has never been my thing, so I have to admit, I turned my nose up a bit at Tory Burch in the past. However, her Fall/Winter 2009 collection made me do a double take and I’ve seriously reconsidered accepting that marriage proposal from a wealthy New York investment banker type.
Wait, what? Banks are failing and the stock market is in the dumps? Oh. Nevermind…

Anyway, this is a look you can recreate with minimal shopping (dang!) since you probably have most of the pieces in your closet right now (and if you don’t, they’re not hard to find):

My interpretation:

wearitnowtrbdiy0309

Left: BCBG cardigan, Forever21 blouse, Express skirt, vintage boots. Right: Anthropologie cardigan, Moda Internationale blouse, H&M skirt, vintage boots.

I often find that recreating runway looks forces me to combine my own pieces in ways I may not have otherwise. It sounds counterintuitive, but sometimes being a copycat can inspire creativity. It all depends on how you look at it!

Show Nuff:Paris Fashion Week

No Comments 16 March 2009

shownuffparisOh, what I wouldn’t give to have been in Paris during Fashion Week, cavorting with Carine & Co. while swigging champagne at some seedy Parisian dance club in Le Marais. Maybe I would’ve had a chance to ask Kanye what was up with his girl  Amber Rose…who is she, again?

Back to the point:

parisbluedress0309

Not really naughty, but not necessarily nice, either, I’m really feeling cobalt blue right now. The cool shade adds a bright punch of color to an otherwise (mostly) neutral season.

parisjumpsuits0309

Some were sparkly, some were slouchy, some were oddly reminiscent of a cross between a business suit and a military-style onesie. I’ve always been a fan of one-pieces–just make sure you use the bathroom before zipping it up.

parisforties0309

It was lovely to see such controlled glamour strutting down the runways in styles reminiscent of the fabulous femme fatales of the forties (alliteration is fun!). Bring on the shoulder pads, nipped waists, and smoldering stares.

So, basically:

parisequation0309

Why does Paris Fashion Week just feel different? Did you have any favorites?

Whew, Fashion Month is over! Why am I so exhausted? Really, it’s not like I went to New York, London, and Milan

Ah, Milano. Voglio venire e mangiare tutto il cibo!  Alas, I will have to get my fill of eye-talian food and fashion via the interwebz like a good little midwestern fashionista. On the bright side, at least I haven’t had to deal with the jetlag that comes with traveling to New York and London!

Aside: Was it just me or was there a LOT of fur on the runways this season? I know it’s for Fall/Winter, but really…

Moving on:

milanblackblue0309

For some reason, this color combination–especially black and navy blue–always makes me feel sort of mysterious and very French. The key is to make sure that the difference between the two colors is pronounced so as not to look like you tried to match but failed.

milanmetallics03091

I’m drawn to shiny things like a moth to a flame. Since much of this season revolves around dark colors, tough-as-nails studs and leather, and general urban warrior bitch gear, a little sparkle and shine goes a long way towards softening the look.

milansuiting03092

Full disclosure: I don’t own an honest-to-goodness, both pieces match and came together as a set suit. Something about the jacket and skirt/pants being sold together makes me feel like someone is dictating how I should wear them, which I resent. Man, I’m a rebel!

Most of the suits I could realistically afford are kind of boring anyway, but these fantasy runway versions? Now this I can work with!

So, in summary:

The rest of the Fash Pack already moved on to Paris, but did you have any favorites from Milan? Why the heck did it seem so short?

Show 'Nuff: London Fashion Week

Two Fashion Weeks down, two to go! London was, as usual, the wild card of the group, with a number of up-and-comers fresh out of Central Saint Martins showing their designs on the runways.  Tales of fabulous parties in hole-in-the-wall pubs filled with drunken, dancing (Br)it-girls make me want to say things like “What’s all this, then?”  in a (really bad) faux-British accent!

Let’s get this party started:

lfwoldeenglish0209

Houndstooth and checks and tweeds, oh my!  Traditional English gear mixed with modern accessories (golden damask thigh-high boots = YES) creates a fresh but familiar silhouette.

lfwartprints0209

Fancy wearing your art instead of hanging it on the wall?  These modern masters have made it easy by splashing their creations in colorful abstract prints. In this case, looking like a full-on Monet is a good thing.

 lfwboldshoulder0209

Am I the only one who watches Dynasty clips on YouTube on a regular basis? Seriously, Krystle, Alexis, and Dominique’s wardrobes were the inspiration for more fashion fantasies than I can count, linebacker shoulder pads and all. Plus, some days I’m all about a good catfight!

lfwrococo0209

The sheer glamour of the Graeme Black show made my heart palpitate. As much as I loved all the grungy black leather and hooker boots stomping down the runways at the New York shows, I usually prefer to glam it up a bit (see Dynasty reference above).  The coolly lavish colors and textures of these Baroque-inspired looks provide an interesting counterpoint to the casual sportswear shown elsewhere.

As for the London Equation:

lfwequation

What did you think? Did you attend any parties?  I need to live vicariously through someone
