Changing (style) direction

2 Comments 15 February 2010

For the past several seasons, fashion has been all about tough-girl grunge chic, replete with biker-inspired leather and spikes. “We’re in a recession for chrissakes!” everyone exclaimed. Cue the shaggy hair, kohl-encircled eyes, and slashed and shredded clothing that looked like it barely survived the apocalypse; all finished off with four-inch platform stripper heels.

NYFW, Fall 2009

It makes me tired thinking about it, and I’m a pretty hardcore strong-willed bitchy type. Maintaining such a defensive stance is exhausting!  Shoot, even Xena had her vulnerable moments.

All the leather and bleaching and shredding was fun for a while, but now I’m thinking it would be nice to feel pretty, instead of pretty tough. I’m ready for something softer, and while I’m not necessarily looking to drape myself in mountains of florals and bows and pastel ruffles (though it worked for Chloe Sevigny), it would be nice not to feel like I’m an armored truck heading into combat 24/7.

Some days, yes, I will be in Power Bitch mode just because sometimes I wake up in the takin’ names and kickin’ butt mindset.  Other times, though, it would be nice to dress in a way that conveys more vulnerability–not necessarily weakness, but…openness. All the hardcore fashion feels a little closed off, which is understandable in times of hardship when you need increased protection from the uncertainties of life. While things are still pretty uncertain (when aren’t they?), I’m exhausted. I’m ready for a change in direction.

Um, let’s keep the stripper shoes, please.

Reading Roundup: Social media gurus and blogger Barbie

1 Comment 12 February 2010

Sorry I’ve been MIA…then again, my name is TaMIA. Corny, I know… Let’s move on:

Become a social media guru in two minutes or less, now available with cassette tapes! Who knew it was so easy?

Ah, the green screens of the Apple IIe bring back so many computer lab memories. Anyone else remember desperately hoping the weather cooperated when playing Lemonade Stand, learning the difference between prime and composite numbers with Number Munchers, and dying of dysentery (seriously, every time) playing The Oregon Trail?

We girls can do anything (as long as we have our half-caf soy mocha lattes), right Blogger Barbie?

How is Stephanie Seymour still this hot? Does she have some kind of pact with el diablo? Where can I sign up?

Creating your own deadlines and setting aggressive goals for your business. Can (and should) be applied to personal projects, too. Ahem.

Why small actions are more important than big plans. Tip: “You can jump in anywhere in the process to get it going.”

French retailers revolt against e-book hegemony. The publishing world is getting ugly as traditional and new media collide, and it’s gonna get worse before it gets better.

Alexander McQueen’s death left me shocked, then sad, then confused, then kinda pissed. Why? Is it ever really that bad?

Reading Roundup

Interesting reads I’ve come across on the web:

Though not really surprised, I was FLOORED by the H&M Clothes Trashing report. Seriously? I know they’re not exactly high priced items, but even if they were, is it really more cost-effective, and more importantly, environmentally ethical to destroy and dump bags of unused clothing?

Social Media Business Strategy Great article about implementing a social media business strategy on Mashable. Remember, set your objectives and listen first!

Startup therapy:  Ten questions to ask yourself every month Thought-provoking questions for current and wannabe entrepreneurs & freelancers. They get harder as you go.

Independent Magazine Publisher Magazine launches. Yesss! Can we form a club or a support group or something?

Updating the Babysitter’s Club The Babysitter’s Club is making a comeback with a prequel and “updated” versions of the first two books, but can we please leave the outfit descriptions (especially Claudia’s) the same? Pretty please? In the meantime, this graphic novel version of the BSC has win all over it.

Writer Lauren Sherman at The Fashion Beat recounts the Ten Moments in Fashion that Changed the Business (this decade). Anyone else remember pre-Rachel Zoe, when you had to explain what a stylist was because people had never heard of such a thing?

Dig if you will these pictures

Back when the weather was still warm (you know, the good ol’ days), Cincy Chic sponsored a photo shoot with local photographer Neysa Ruhl. We took some group photos as well as these individual shots, which were used for a story covering local bloggers–I represented the fashion side. REPRESENT!

Seeing the final product, one thing is two things are for sure: 1. I need new black dominatrix-y shoes 2. I am not in the running to become America’s Next Top Model.

All the World's a Stage

I know what you’re thinking:  Tamia, didn’t you already take ridiculously self-indulgent photos in this outfit?

Ah, but no, grasshopper. This is yet another jumpsuit I picked up during a thrift shopping adventure. One that sat lonely and unused in the trunk of my car until I rescued it in a half-hearted attempt at reorganization.

Jumpsuit, vintage; belt and sunglasses, Gucci; sandals, Ash; bracelets and earrings from a craft fair.

The similarity of the pieces is a total coincidence given that they were purchased on separate occasions, but I’ve decided I kind of like having both as an option!

Loss
On a sadder note, yesterday was a really crap day: losing both Farrah Fawcett and Michael Jackson on the same day was really just too much. Both idols in their own right, Michael was obviously an inspiration to me (and many others) in so many ways. I had MJ posters on my walls, jewelry plastered with his likeness (Jheri Curl and all), and a sparkly glove or two for good measure.

His music has been the soundtrack to my life! I remember seeing the Moonwalk for the first time on the Motown 25 special–it was like magic!–and everyone trying to do it the next day.

I remember being haunted by my fuzzily child-like comprehension of the Billie Jean video–not really knowing what it meant, but not completely misunderstanding it either.

I remember being straight up terrified at the Thriller video (even though I wanted to be Ola Raye)–MJ turning into a zombie? Not my Michael! I would jump off my parent’s bed and run from the room as soon as the werewolf howled at the beginning of the song!

I remember watching  Moonwalker (especially the Smooth Criminal video) at slumber parties and playing around with my uncles and cousins at family gatherings trying to do that “extreme lean.”

There’s so much more–I mean the man’s musical catalog spans decades and his videos used to premiere on network TV at prime time!–but a part of me can’t help but feel like a little piece of my childhood is gone forever. RIP Michael.

Current Obsession: CoutureLab

A few days ago (I don’t remember how) I stumbled upon an image of a gorgeous Ann Demeulemeester vest. My mouse clicked on it of its own volition, and I arrived at the CoutureLab site.

Compelled by a propensity to obsess over things I don’t need/can’t afford, I cautiously clicked through the sparse but amazing collection of antique lace neck pieces (not plain ol’ necklaces, thankyouverymuch), tulle skirts dusted with gold leaf, exotic printed gowns, and hand-embroidered vests. Everything is so…rich and luxe–exactly what no one can afford right now–and I think that’s part of the reason I’m so drawn to it.

All the pieces seem like they belong in the extra-large closet of an extremely sophisticated world traveler. So let’s take a quick fantasy trip, shall we?

Who wouldn’t want to sail away to some exotic, practically unknown island on a luxurious private yacht? Imagine sipping martinis on the deck, surrounded by the gentle rush of the dark ocean, wearing an antique scarf dress that billows in the soft breeze as the sun sets on the edge of the sea. Ahhhh…

couturelab_chocolategold040

Fall is my favorite season, which probably has something to do with the fact that my birthday is in October. For some reason–because it’s never actually happened–I see myself strolling through grand royal gardens surrounded by the gold and bronze of falling leaves and finely gilded facades wearing a long, sweeping skirt, where the only sound is the faint crackling of leaves underfoot.

couturelabparis0409

You know the iconic photo of the model in the YSL le smoking? I’ve often imagined myself (a taller, willowy version as such) cloaked in sleek black formal wear on a Paris street at night, street lights barely illuminating the shadows, wisps of jazz music from a nearby bar delicately floating up to the starry sky…

All this from a darn shopping site with a bunch of stuff I can’t afford–seriously, the prices hurt my feelings. One one hand, the transportative quality is a huge part of the reason I love fashion. On the other hand, it’s also part of the reason I shop too much. Ah, well.

Has fashion ever taken you away to a far off place? Where did you go?

Fashion Week

Fashion Week(s)

No Comments 16 February 2009

Ahhh…it is once again that time of year.

The smell of hastily pinned designer clothing and overpriced five-inch high heels is in the air. Giraffe-like 19 year olds with glowing skin and perfect hair run amok in some of the biggest cities in the world.  Stylephiles unlucky enough to live in places like Ohio obsessively check style.com for the latest updates from their favorite designers.

Yes, dear friends, it’s Fashion Week(s).

New York Fashion Week kicked off this past weekend, and the rest (London, Milan, Paris) will follow in their usual predictably unpredictable style. I’ll be keeping a close eye on the runways (well, as close as I can get via the intergoogle) and will report on my favorites whenever the heck I feel like it, probably each Friday.

Before I sign off, it would be remiss of me to take credit for the brilliant/completely ‘hood title of this series of posts: Show ‘Nuff.  No, I must give credit where credit is due, and acknowledge the classic feel-good film of the ’80’s that inspired me:

The Last Dragon (1985). Let me just say up front that I thought Leroy was foine, and I wanted to be Vanity so badly. If you haven’t seen it, click the image to watch the trailer and get thee over to Netflix immediately to make it first in your queue.

Current Obsession: Indian Bridal Jewelry

No Comments 13 February 2009

obsessionindian02091

Fueled by a newfound desire for dramatic necklaces (I’m usually an earring gal) and a late-night viewing of Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (it’s not what you think), I am now obsessed with traditional Indian bridal jewelry.

As a result, I’ve spent many hours Googling and ogling (is it a coincidence that those words are so similar?) Kundan jewelry, mangalsutra, tikka, jhoomar, and all sorts of beautiful things I want to drape myself in for no apparent reason.

What have you been inspired by recently? Anything you can’t stop thinking about?

zanottisoften0209  Due to a larger than expected bonus, I took the unrequited shoe yearning as a sign rather than a test, and bought the slightly trashy, over-the-top, waaayyy out of my budget shoes I’d been obsessing about.Buyer’s remorse?  Not even a little bit.

Have you ever been unsure about a purchase? Did you regret it or did it work out for the best?
