C'est Ma Vie, Do-It-Yourself

O Happy Dagger

6 Comments 09 August 2010

Last weekend, I:

Hung out at a friend’s birthday party:

There was beer, chocolate cake, and good food. Officially, I don’t like chocolate cake–I only like chocolate, not chocolate-flavored things–but I made an exception this time. You know, to be polite.

Completed a really simple DIY alteration I’ve been meaning to take care of for over a year:

I did something easy, removing the lace collar from a puff-sleeved linen blazer. I’m sort of (but only sort of) ashamed to admit that I usually just tuck the collar in and tape it down. So lazy.

All I really did was carefully remove the lace with a rotary cutter, which has been sitting in my dust-covered craft kit unused for, oh, 3 years?

Discovered the next Banksy-wannabe:

Someone’s seen Exit Through the Gift Shop.

Volunteered at Second Sunday in OTR:

I took pictures, played DJ for the Talent Show, gorged on vegan cinnamon rolls (um, vegan means no calories, right?), and bought a pair of earrings from a friend who makes jewelry.

Whatever is Lovely by Cynthia Ford earrings

They look a bit like daggers made from pearly seashells, like something a kickass mermaid would wear. Innocent, yet dangerous…Right up my alley!

When I got home, I fell asleep watching an episode of Poirot:

Does anyone else watch this? Most of the stories are set in the 1920′s – 1940′s, and the costumes and scenery are exquisite. Checking out costumes is probably 90% of the reason I watch television and movies in the first place.

How was your weekend?

Oh, and I’ll be announcing the winner of The Limited gift certificate Wednesday!

C'est Ma Vie, Fashion Week

Kicking off Cincinnati Fashion Week

1 Comment 21 April 2010

Monday marked the start of the very first Cincinnati Fashion Week, a 5-day extravaganza of parties and events designed to entertain and provide me with an excuse (finally!) to break out the Giuseppes.

It’s also the week of article submission deadlines for the upcoming issue of Style Sample, so posting will either be very heavy (if I manage to get my ish together), or very light (if I collapse into a quivering mass of nerves), depending on how much alcohol is involved.*

Monday started with a reception at The Brush Factory (if you recall, founder Rosie was featured in issue #5 of Style Sample). Genius that I am, I remembered my camera but forgot the battery, which it needs in order to, you know, function.  Obviously, I didn’t get any pictures at the event, so you’ll have to make do with photos of photos from their lookbook, which is about as bootleg as it gets.

On Tuesday night, I stopped by the designer meet-and-greet at FB (no, not Facebook–an actual bar) and, having remembered my camera and battery, took a bunch of random pictures under the guise of continuing my foray into photography.

Lesson of the night: do not attempt to take candid shots of fashion people.  They can detect when a camera is pointed at them with almost laser precision, and will invariably smile and pose as soon as the flash goes off. Seriously, every time.

Adorable guy whose name I forget with CFW founder Nathan

Stylish partygoers

A CFW volunteer with designer and model Ashley (right), who I recognized from the Rachel Rachel Roy spring lookbook. She said they randomly contacted her and asked her to fly to NY for the shoot!

Dude’s shoes were so cool, I took a picture. ‘Cause I’m shallow like that.

Designer Lisa Malanij was there with her publicist, who works for an agency but does freelance PR & design on the side. Now that’s what I like to see–get out there and make things happen!

*Likely not very much, because I drink maybe one glass of wine per month. However…I’m thinking this week may require a break from the norm.

After nearly being left behind by the bus in Shelbyville Indiana, getting lost wandering around Michigan Avenue for over an hour, dancing until my feet hurt (these shoes are NOT made for walking) and randomly running into an old friend on the street, I can honestly say that I had a great time in Chicago.

Until next time, Chi-town…
