Flower Power

9 Comments 12 April 2012

Whenever I try to Tyra-stare it comes out like this. Oy.

Please note that I am fully aware that I’m too old to wear a poufy floral mini skirt, and that I know in my heart of hearts that this is NOT 1988 which means poufy floral anything is a no-go. Just let me have this one, mmkay?

Forever21 floral skirt (similar style here); Gap sweater (similar style); thrifted blazer; Colin Stuart boots (similar here).

Photo Diary: Chicken Suit Sunday

Vintage jumpsuit, thrifted vest and belt; Ash sandals, Marc Jacobs bag

This weekend, I flaunted my chicken legs in a  Top Gun Goes To Summer Camp jumpsuit; chatted with some great folks at a New Media Cincy meetup; had a fantastic time hanging out with my dad on Fountain Square; mingled with hipsters at the Chicken Lays an Egg fashion show (which was the rowdiest, sassiest fashion show I’ve been to in a long time, and I swear show co-organizer Jessy had better post a picture of the dress she wore because it was BEYOND), and snapped pics while practically inhaling some of the tastiest ceviche EVER at Second Sunday on Main.

How was your weekend?

Sherlock and the Revolution

Something about this overcoat (as it is a proper overcoat) makes me feel like a cross between Purple Rain-era Prince and Sherlock Holmes. Which is to say it makes me feel EXTRASUPERDOPE.

“Tell Wendy and Lisa to find Dr. Watson, stat!”

Gap jeans, NY & Co shirt, overcoat from an old costume, vintage clutch and shoes, Urban Outfitters scarf

Do you ever wear clothes that make you feel like a character (in a good way)?

Casual Style: Sweat Me

Do you ever feel like it’s easier to get dressed up than it is to go casual? Sometimes I have a hard time on the weekends because 70% of my wardrobe is work clothing.

Sweatsuits are about as casual as it gets, and I have exactly two pair–they were Christmas gifts. I refuse to wear them outside of the house. As I am vehemently opposed to sweats of the hot-pink-velour-with-rhinestones-across-the-arse variety, I hadn’t given much thought to expanding my casual-wear options to include anything other than the occasional American Apparel tri-blend pullover.

So, I was surprised and more than a little relieved when designers started showing artfully styled sweats/casual wear on the runway:

Then I noticed some of my favorite bloggers were in on the game:

Jane of Sea of Shoes, Rumi of Fashion Toast, Juley of Swank Heights

That was enough to drive me to do some online window shopping (screen shopping?). Everything can be mixed and matched since the whole point is to look like you just threw it on:

Perfect for those times when even jeans take too much thought. What do you wear to look semi-presentable on your roll-out-of-bed casual days?

In my quest to actually wear the clothes in my closet/armoire/storage bins/car trunk, I dug out this old wool sweater I bought during a trip to Scotland in high school.  For reasons I can’t recall, it was a really big deal to buy a wool sweater on that trip…

I’m pretty sure I wore this sweater in one of my “senior pictures,” which I may post someday if I feel like giving y’all a reason to laugh. If I recall correctly, the photo involves me in a crouching-on-one-knee-chin-resting-on-fist-staring-intensely-at-camera pose in the woods (?), so, yeah. Biiiig laughs.

Have you unearthed any long lost clothing lately? How did you wear it?

Old/vintage(?) sweater, Leigh & Luca scarf, Old Navy skirt, thrifted shirt, purse, and boots.

Edit: Ooh, found out I was featured as Glamour.com’s “Today’s Best-Dressed Reader” on Feb 2nd. Yay me!

One Piece, Three Ways

Since I’m a pack rat at heart, another one of my resolutions is to find new ways to wear things that are already in my closet. This philsophy also happens to be a little easier on my bank account than my usual “I have nothing to wear so let’s go shopping and spend money I don’t have” line of reasoning.

Inspired by Marian over at The House of Style looking fab in her strapless velvet top, I picked a piece that I love but rarely get a chance to wear: a military style bustier from Grey Ant. (Full disclosure: I really had to suck it in to get into this thing. Good thing resolution #137 involves hitting the gym! )

To me, it’s always been more of a “going out” piece, but I wanted to find ways to wear it casually, and a way to make it appropriate for work:

Wearing it over a cotton tank tank with cuffed jeans and a thrifted army shirt takes advantage of the military style and brings it down a notch. Pairing it with a classic button down, pearls, and a pencil skirt adds a bit of refinement while still, as Puffy would say, “preserving the sexy.” Layering it over another bustier with cropped pants, purple heels, and Claudia Kishi worthy feather earrings makes it ready for a night out!

Das Boot: Casual Style

No Comments 30 December 2008

cowboybaby12081It had the nerve to be 70 degrees (yes, Fahrenheit. I know) here in Cincinnati this weekend. I decided to take advantage of this (rare!) good fortune and fulfill my semi-urban cowgirl needs by pulling out the ol’ Dingo boots.

Ah, the Dingos. I found them as I was casually strolling* through a local Goodwill and spent a good seven minutes tugging, pulling, and grunting muffled cursewords trying to fit my apparently gargantuan feet into these lovelies. But I persevered! It was worth it, too: slouchy-soft burgundy leather, stacked wooden heel, gold-tipped toe…the ultimate disco/cowgirl boot!

*Casually strolling = elbowing elderly ladies and small children who dared to even glance at items I might want
