Under Consideration

Okay, so I’m seriously considering getting a real hair cut. By seriously, I mean for the past two days, which is A REALLY LONG TIME, GUYS, especially considering I usually just grab some scissors and start hacking. Which is a big part of the reason I need a real, professional, non-jacked up hair cut now.

I was browsing the Internets for ideas, and came across several pictures of Tanika Ray, whose ‘do I’ve always admired. I love the shape!

The hard part is finding a good stylist who’ll know what to do with my hair. The last time I got a “real, professional” cut (about 2 years ago), the guy–who was supposedly used to working on natural hair–tried to dry-comb my hair WITHOUT MOISTURIZER (fellow naturals know that’s a huuuuuge no-no) and cut off about 3.5 inches when I asked for a half-inch trim. Suffice it to say I’m wary.

What do y’all think? Could I pull off this cut?

You’d look great in this style. (But I have to admit your hair has looked great every time I’ve seen you – on the blog or IRL. You could even rock a buzz cut.)

Aww, thanks Kasmira. I actually DID have a TWA (teeny weeny afro) back when I first “went natural!”

You’ve got amazing hair as it is– but I think you could totally do this. It’d be a slightly funky twist on your classic style. Like an extra modern update.

And girl, I HEAR you on the “professionals.” Haven’t had a really good cut since I got back to New Orleans. All these men folks keep butchering it.

WTH is up with that? Don’t tell me you can do my hair if you can’t do my hair!

I think this would look lovely on you BUT trying find someone who can cut it right will be a task. I love your hair and think you look great in the styles you do on your own. I suggest the next time you see a natural with a banging haircut you grab that sista and ask her where she got it done because you don’t want to end up in tears…like I have at times LOL

Samirah, I’ve been asking everyone and their mother where they get their hair did. I swear it feels like I’m searching for a husband!

Yeah, you could totally pull this off but I agree with everyone else. Trying to find someone who can cut natural hair is …a challenge. I had someone who wanted to cut my hair wet. YES, wet. Good luck.

Why is it such a challenge, though? Don’t they teach different techniques in cosmetology school? It’s so frustrating!

Absolutely. I’ve always loved Tanika’s hair, and think the shape would look great on you.

Tamia, I love love love the hairstyle, but I also love what you have now. I have Jewish girl curly hair and I am so envious of your volume.
