Attention Platforms: This Has Gone Too Far

What’s with all the extra-exaggerated, extra ugly platforms these days? Wouldn’t these sandals be cuter and more practical with a few inches chopped off the bottom?

Are people no longer driving, where you need to feel how much pressure you’re putting on the pedals? Are people not walking down stairs, where it’s helpful to feel when your foot hits the step so you don’t tumble to your death, Talky Tina-style? Are people not considering how ridiculous all this will seem in a year or two? WON’T SOMEONE THINK OF THE CHILDREN?!

As an aside, I bought a pair of sandals exactly like these back in 1999. They were from American Eagle and cost a whopping (to me at the time) $35. I’m not sure I’m ready to re-live those days–especially at 17 times the cost–just yet.

Don’t get me wrong, I don’t have anything against a reasonable 1/4″ to 1.5″ platform, but FOUR inches? Come on! Do you like super exaggerated platforms or are they as crazy as I think they are?

I am not fond of the ankle breakers either. I’m tall enough and don’t feel the need to go wobbling around on trendy shoes. I’ll stick to flats thank you.

I appreciate a good heel ’cause I’m a bit of a shorty, but I’m not interested in BREAKING MY NECK thankyouverymuchJefferyCampbell.

Haha! I love this post. I think the sky high platforms are cool to look at(I would display them as artwork in my house, lol) but they’d be very impractical for me to wear as they just don’t fit into my lifestyle. I’m on my feet all the time- from work ( I’m in retail), to running errands, to dancing the night away 😉 four inch platforms just won’t cut it.

Agreed. I think they’re impractical for anyone who’s lifestyle includes walking more than 3 feet at a time!

I don’t mind a bit of platform, but I think part of that is a fondness stemming from my own late 90s footwear. The ones that make me cringe are these crazy looking types: http://www.huffingtonpost.com/2009/10/07/alexander-mcqueens-10-inc_n_312692.html

Ah, the ’90s. Me and my knockoff Spice Girls platform sneakers are reminiscing right there with ya.

Ha! Delurking to say thank you for this! Granted, I am at the other end of the spectrum, (generally, in flats so flat they might be concave), but enough is enough already.

Right? How much higher can they get before walking in them requires some kind of special license?

I love a good platform but I think things are getting out of hand. I love platforms because I am short and I’m carrying more weight than I think a stiletto can handle AND I walk pretty much everywhere. I also have high arches and plats do help with that. All that said this ish is getting redic! Your shoes need not be so high that you need a step stool to get into them.

I also think for those of us who lived through the 60’s, 70’s, 90’s…it’s been done!

Exactly! I don’t have anything against platforms–I definitely appreciate the shock absorption–but seriously. SERIOUSLY.

I swear you read my mind again! I, too, love a good wedge/platform and prefer it over a heel. But, good grief! I was starting to feel like a grandma 🙂

THANK YOU!!!! Finally someone has voiced what I’ve been feeling! I don’t understand how people think they look cute. I see too many women with beautiful outfits ruined by big chunky platforms these days. It’s particularly unflattering on the super slim ladies. I personally think they know it looks ridiculous, but some folks are suckers for a trend. I AINT HAVIN’ IT!! LOL!

I dabbled in some platform sneakers in the early 90s and now look back at my ridiculousness (although Isabel Marant has apparently brought them back?). Maybe it’d be different if the platform had some sort of utility or even display function, but it’s just a giant, solid block. I’m a shorty so I love heels, but these just make me feel unnatural.

I’m drawn to the Isabel Marant wedge sneakers completely against my will, but the shoes with the “giant, solid block” (apt description!) make me feel like Herman Munster.

So True! I agree that these platforms are outta control. Lol! They are so big and masculine. Maybe flattering on Rupaul but not me!

They’re SO clunky. Definitely doesn’t work with my chicken legs!

Clearly y’all don’t remember the 70s. Now THOSE were some freaky platforms!

Agreed! That’s why it’s so upsetting–didn’t we learn anything the first time around?
