Zbornak Ztyle

11 Comments 19 January 2012

I don’t remember the first time I saw an episode of Golden Girls, but I clearly remember sitting on my parents’ bed, trying not to laugh at a raunchy joke the sharp-tongued Dorothy Zbornak made at the expense of one Ms. Blanche Devereaux. I stifled the laugh because I knew I wasn’t supposed to “get” the joke, but I did. I always got Dorothy’s jokes, ’cause she was a smart-ass like me.

Since Golden Girls was an ’80s show about a group of retirement-aged women, the wardrobe was always…interesting. Lots of sequins and chiffon, of course. And while I appreciated Blanche’s predilection for form-fitting spangles, Dorothy’s oversized cowlneck tunics and slouchy Hammer pants seemed like the senior citizen version of downtown cool. Count me in:

Plastic Island dress; ASOS trousers; Allen B. top; DKNY heels, earrings from High Street

I’m definitely a Dorothy, cheesecake cravings and all. You?

Winter Wares

Since I’m gearing up for The Big Switch–you know, switching out all of my lightweight summer stuff for heavier knits and wools–I thought it would be a good idea to keep this season’s color + texture inspiration in mind. Otherwise, I wind up trying to fit EVERYTHING into my closet/armoire/accessory annex and y’all know that never works!

Runway Ripoff: Cynthia Steffe Spring ’12

4 Comments 10 October 2011

Since Madre Naturaleza decided a little Summer-in-the-Fall weather was in order (not complaining!), I figured it was a good time to test drive another look from Spring 2012.

Thrifted shirt and pants; Moda Int’l top; vintage heels

A simple cropped sweater, men’s military shirt, and striped rayon pants I “altered” made it simple to replicate– I just added a stack of bangle bracelets and switched the strappy sandals (it is Fall, after all) for a slightly more substantial platform heel. Easy!

Tumblr Tuesday: Wine bottle cages and Mixed animal prints

Remembering how I used to play Guess Who by myself (I was an only child, okay?); Admiring this bike accessory made for a true G; Loving the variety of animal prints represented here; Dreaming of collapsing in this bedroom and pulling a Rip Van Winkle; Plotting ways to incorporate a tweed cape into my Fall wardrobe; Trying to figure out exactly what this dessert is and what I need to do in order to eat it.

Street Style Favorites: July

No Comments 13 July 2011

I finally had a chance to catch up on my Bloglovin’ reader (sort of), so I thought I’d share some of my favorite street style photos:

Personal style blog street styleTOP ROW:
A leather collar immediately turns any look badass (Fashion Copious); I can’t wait to wear this full mini + slouchy sweater combo once the heat calms down–no, really, CALM DOWN HEAT (Paulinemma); I swear a good hat and proper blazer can make almost anything look better (Easy Fashion)

BOTTOM ROW:
A slouchy top and short-shorts looks downtown-chic when done right (Chloe et sa boite à conserves); Combining black-and-white prints is the easiest way to get into the pattern mixing game (Stockholm Street Style); See, THIS is how you wear a bra top in public, Sue Ellen Mischke (Sam Is Home).

Tumblr Tuesday: Cardboard cameras and cake art

No Comments 24 May 2011

Something about this look at the Miss Unkon show feels perfect right now; A single flower bathed in light has a very calming effect; The idea of a (non-working) cardboard camera is oddly intriguing; This is clearly the most realistic clock EVER; I’ve always been partial to this Julian Louie x Aldo collection even though I couldn’t find it locally; Clearly, I’m not the only one who believes that cake = art.

I forgot my mantra

6 Comments 05 November 2010

The clocks turn back this weekend, which means it’s officially Fall, which means the next six months will consist of me gazing longingly at my summer sundresses and cursing my parents’ choice to raise me in frosty Ohio instead of on a lovely Caribbean island where fruity drinks in pineapples and naps on the beach are a way of life. Thanks, mom.

But I digress. What was I saying?

Oh, right, it’s Fall. The onset of cooler weather makes me feel kind of Annie Hall/Charlie Girl/Diana Ross in Mahogany–lots of menswear-inspired separates in warm neutral tones.

I played around with a pair of baggy pleated trousers, a thrifted tie-neck blouse, a knit vest, and platform heels until this happened:

Anthropologie trousers; thrifted blouse, vest, bag, and shoes; Jamawar scarf

I’ve been deep conditioning my hair (hence the beret) so I couldn’t swish it around for no reason like in the Charlie commercials, but trust, that will come soon.

Don’t forget to Fall Back this weekend!
