Not Quite A Schoolgirl

It’s been a “few” years since I could credibly claim even attending any sort of school, let alone wearing a uniform. As much as I’ve always loved clothes, I would’ve killed for a Gossip Girl-style uniform back in junior high and high school–and sometimes I still like to pretend.

The prices are usually a bit rich for my blood, but I love pulling from there because they carry great labels and have fabulous stuff.

Have a great weekend!

Last night, I met up with several local style bloggers at 4th Street Boutique to discuss planning some sort of fun shindig, before heading to Saks to get beautified.

Shop Around: Casablanca Vintage

6 Comments 07 October 2011

Just because I’m not shopping doesn’t mean I can’t encourage other people to do so! When I find good stuff, I like to share (I’m generous like that), so let’s Shop Around:

Almost exactly a year ago during Style Tour, I visited Casablanca Vintage and it was a hot mess and a half. There was a mountain of clothes piled on the floor, there didn’t seem to be any order to the way things were organized, and the lights were out in half the store, making any sort of shopping nearly impossible. I swear, it looked like an episode of “Hoarders” had exploded in there.

However, several people have told me it’s been cleaned up in the past year and I’m open to giving second chances, so I stopped by after finishing up some returns in Northside. I discovered that yes, it’s been cleaned up. And yes, it’s goooood:

The first section I hit was women’s skirts, and I was pretty impressed.  There were skirts galore from the ’60s, ’70s, and ’80s, and whole section dedicated to plaid kilts. If you’re looking for vintage skirts, GO HERE.

I also found a pair of perfectly stiff, stand-up-on-their-own high-waisted wide-legged (is that enough adjectives for you?) jeans and a gorgeous sequined shirt dress that I really wanted to take home with me.

Of course I had to check out the men’s section (tip: ALWAYS check the men’s and boy’s sections when thrifting and vintage shopping. Cozy oversized sweaters and tailored blazers abound.), which was full of Junior High Boyfriend sweaters, quirky button-downs, and sharply tailored pleated pants like my dad used to wear.

Over on the left side of the store, there were even more clothing racks and a decent selection of shoes, the most interesting of which were way too small for my modern-day size seven feet. Fun to look at, though.

The racks in that area were filled with beautiful, fragile, high end vintage dresses, from Jackie O.-esque day dresses to brightly colored costumery. The guy working there said that they often rent and sell clothing to theater companies, which would explain the more flamboyant (but still wearable, IMO) pieces.

I also happened upon a rack of fun military jackets, most of which were disappointingly large on me. Sigh. I love a good military jacket, probably thanks to MJ.

Casablanca is what a good old fashioned vintage store should be, with the requisite musty smells and lingering scent of old perfume. It’s full of Izod sweaters and polyester dresses and things your second grade teacher would have worn, a mish-mash of mod and prairie and disco and punk with plenty of sequins for good measure. If you have time this weekend, check it out!

Tumblr Tuesday: Biodomes and Block Heels

2 Comments 20 September 2011

I’m obsessed with the colors and shapes and general overall perfection of these Martin Bautista designs; A self-sustaining biodome is probably the only type of indoor greenery I could keep alive; Stay Puft has been amusing-yet-disturbing since Ghostbusters, and this Soylent Puft illustration is no exception; There’s gotta be something clever to say about the correlation between clothing and cash represented by a shirt made of money; A block heel looks so much fresher than a stiletto right now; I’m currently in a place mentally where I need to be in that place physically.

Mark Your Calendars!

1 Comment 16 September 2011

Last night I took my getting-sick self to the vitaminwater uncapped LIVE kickoff event to take some pictures and whatnot for A-Line‘s website.

I’d hoped to get my hands on some of that yummy-looking mac and cheese, but I waited too long–by the time I took the first round of photos, it was gone. Note to self: Eat as soon as you see the food. Looking greedy is inconsequential because YOU ARE GREEDY.

Glow On

Speaking of vitaminwater unplugged LIVE, this month we’re holding PopShop at the Show Us Your Glow fashion event on Tuesday 9/20 instead of Final Friday, so be sure to stop by and say hi. We have 17 vendors signed up, so there’ll be plenty of crafty goodies to choose from!

Fashion Bash

If you’re available Tuesday afternoon, you should definitely go to the Dress For Success Fashion Bash luncheon. I went last year and had a great time, and this year my friend Susi is chairing the event so I KNOW it will be fantastic!

Restore Yourself

Continue your do-gooder streak on Saturday 9/24 at RESTORE, an evening of fashion, art, and music at organized by my friend Emily of Stop Traffick Fashion. Proceeds from the event benefit Hagar International, an organization dedicated to helping women and children who have been rescued from slavery.

So mark your calendars, have a great weekend, and I’ll see you out and about next week!

Tamia and the Sad Goodbye

At Second Sunday on Main

Tried to get out and enjoy myself a bit this weekend, despite the fact that I’ve been anxious about today for weeks.

Today, I have to take my boyfriend – aka FriendBoy, aka Ted – to the airport because he’s moving to Poland for three years. He’s been my homie, my photographer, my roller coaster-riding partner, my confidante, my blog’s biggest promoter, and my all-around BFF for almost 4 years now, so I’m extremely sad about it. My goal is to stay busy so I don’t get too depress-y, but I know some days will be better than others.

Taking pictures for the blog

I’ll miss you like crazy, babe! Good luck!
